Manomet Center for Conservation Sciences
Protecting Shorebirds on Alaska's North Slope
Fourteen shorebird species breed on the coastal plain area that includes the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and the National Petroleum Reserve, where oil drilling is underway. Six of these species are in serious decline and may be threatened by development in the Arctic.
Eagle Optics is proud to be the Lead Corporate Sponsor for Manomet Center for Conservation Sciences shorebird study project. The team at Manomet has been collecting data and developing the first map showing shorebird density on the coastal plain. By working in cooperation with government, industry, research, and conservation groups, Manomet has been helping to develop habitat protection and management protocols for the North Slope, and is currently involved with these shorebird conservation plans and related projects.
