Great Hiking Tripod
Mike from Utah
I have a big spotting scope and a large tripod that I use when observing animals from my car. I wanted a relatively light scope and tripod to carry on the trail. I paired this tripod with an Opticron GS 52 and the package weighs less than my big tripod. Grab a foot on this tripod, twist it through four clicks and the leg extends. There is no need to operate a release for each leg segment, twisting the foot releases all sections of the leg. Reverse the process to pack it up. It is light, quick to set up and it packs small. I hang a water bottle on the supplied hook if I need a bit more stability in wind. If you expect this set up to perform like a heavy tripod you will be disappointed, but it is perfect for my intended purpose. It will see more of Yellowstone than my big scope and it will enhance my experience in the Park. I am glad I made this purchase. If you want a scope on the trail you should seriously consider this package. Vortex advertises this tripod at 1.8 pounds, my postal scale puts it at 2 pounds 1 ounce.
Better than expected

I was looking for a solid, stable, compact, and lightweight tripod that I could carry in my daypack. And I didn't want it to "break-the-bank" either. This tripod actually exceeded my expectations!
It feels very well made and strong. The head locks up tight and holds my heavy 20x60 binos without slipping. The quick-connect plate locks up tight too, although it can be tricky to clip in until you get the hang of it.
The only negative I can give it (and it's a small one) is the lack of an adjustment handle. But the little adjustment knob works ok and makes for a more compact unit. Overall I'm happy with the tripod and will probably buy another one for my wife.

This little tripod is awesome. I didnt want to spend the money for a Slik CF tripod so I took my chances with this summit ss. I tried by buddies ridgeview and highcountry and the quality on those was pretty low. This summit ss is much better for the small price difference. The twist lock 5 section legs are great. Awesome backcountry/backpack tripod.
