Great Value with High-End Features - 02/16/2013

by Bob H. from Solon, Ohio

Been using this tripod/head combination here in Florida for bird photography at Merritt Island, Viera Wetlands and other coastal locations. Used with a 500MM lens and a Nikon D7000 camera, the tripod is sturdy, not heavy, and quick and easy to set up. The head included with the tripod is a new design, supplied with a long V dovetailed plate much like a Kirk or Really Right Stuff plate (they fit this mount, by the way). A fool-proof locking mechanism keeps the plate from sliding off the head once it is attached a certain distance, and a very easy to reach lever is provided for releasing it. It's located next to the tightening knob for the plate. A clever "push down" lever releases the center column for height adjustment, and the center column is reversible for close-to-the-ground photography. A unique leg-spreading release mechanism makes that kind of photography for wildflowers and small critters easy. All in all, this Vortex Skyline tripod introduces a number of new, cutting edge design features in a tripod priced less than some plates and heads alone. An excellent tripod for our use down here in FL, and its construction suggests that it will last a long time in the field.

Good tripod, good price - 12/26/2012

by Frank O. from Houston, TX, USA

This tripod is sturdy, and reasonably light for the price. The leg locking clamps are easy to use, and the fluid head works well with both a large and small scope. The mounting plate is extra-long, and can slide forward and back, for adjusting the balance of the scope.
If you don't have the money for an ultra-light carbon-fiber tripod, this one will do just fine, for hundreds of dollars less.
