Wobbley digiscoping - 11/26/2014

by Ian G. from Nevada City California

This is my first serious tripod that I bought with my scope and digiscoping setup. Even before I attached my digiscoping setup, there was lots of shake on a windy coastal day.

Camera shake is profound when the digiscoping setup is attached. I do not have a balance plate, which could be the problem, but any time I touch the handle, there is vicious shake which has reduced the image quality of more than a few shots. Setting the two second timer on my camera usually does the trick, but even using the shutter release cable from the Kowa DA-4 (which is another story) caused the camera to shake.

Due to the fact I have never had a different tripod, and I might need a balance plate, I will commend this tripod on its light weight which was the immediate draw of the system. Currently, I am looking into a balance plate or another tripod head that is better suited to digiscoping. This is starting to negate the benefits of the lightweight tripod.

This might be a good tripod for a smaller scope (I have a Kowa 883) or for environments where there is not strong winds. However, if you are looking to digiscope, I would recommend saving up for a sturdier tripod.

My back is happier with this tripod - 04/04/2014

by Kim S. from Michigan

We had a very sturdy but heavy tripod before we bought the Vanguard Abeo. I hated dragging my tripod and scope along because of the weight, but now I take it everywhere with me. All the adjusting mechanisms work simply and securely, and I like the ease of adjusting the panhead too.

Very stable, yet lightweight tripod - 03/30/2014

Finally got our present from Santa out after a tough winter. Even on a windy March afternoon, our scope stayed steady. We really enjoyed watching the ducks, geese, and sandhill cranes.

Great tripod - 09/26/2013

I love this tripod, I can set it up easily and quickly. The head moves smoothly, with just the right amount of resistance.

Great tripod! - 08/08/2013

by E. LeGrand from Tennessee

I'm a birder with a top quality scope, but I was in need of a LIGHTWEIGHT tripod up to the quality of the scope (to replace a 7 lb. Manfrotto tripod that is too heavy and bulky for convenient air travel). This Vanguard tripod meets my needs exactly, and I have no suggestions for improvement. I especially like the way the quick-release piece securely attaches to the scope (with a screw plus a pin). The quick-release piece is especially easy to attach to the tripod. The handle of the tripod has a nice curvature. The tripod disassembles for air travel so that it is only as long as the length of the legs. My scope is angled, so I can get by with the shorter, hence lighter weight, version.
