Gitzo Ball Head - 06/13/2014

by John R. from TN

Surprisingly I purchased this ball head to use on a monopod which it not a typical use for a ball head. Most people would put a monopod head on it that only moves in the altitude direction since you do not need the pan or tilt capability with a monopod. My initial purpose with this setup was to utilize a camera with a 300mm lens to give me a bit more mobility when compared to a tripod along with helping to steady the lens. Adjusting the tension to where it is just stiff enough allows me to move the camera to whatever position I need while still keeping the monopod in a vertical position. The real benefit I found is using this setup with my 12x50 Swarovski Swarovison binoculars on the Swarovski Binocular mount. This dramatically increases my ability to hold these binoculars steady for a longer time and also gives me more flexibility than mounting it on a tripod. I have been able to view a hawk flying overhead for several minutes with this combination where trying to hold these or any binoculars with my arms alone would never work as well or as long. The ball head itself is just the right size for a monopod and the build quality is good.
