I was a little leery about this head due to the balance aid knob since it seemed a little gimmicky. I purchased it to use with a Swarovski 65 ATS scope. I am pleased to say the balance aid is not gimmick and works quite well. The 65 mm scope alone with a 30X eyepiece is still a bit back heavy. You can tighten the tilt and pan knobs to prevent this but it does make it a bit harder to move. With the balance aid you just loosen the tilt adjustment while holding the scope level. You then tilt the scope in the opposite direction and then engage the balance aid knob. After this the head can be finely adjusted so that almost no effort at all is needed to move it and it stays put. I also tried this with a digiscope setup using the Swarovski DCB-A and lightweight camera. I just had to re-adjust the balance a bit more before locking in the balance aid knob and it works great. No need for a balance rail. I am not sure how well this would work with a larger scope as you may be pushing it's capabilities a bit but with a 65mm scope there are no issues. I would recommend this head to anyone with a 65mm scope or smaller for sure.

Purchased Gitzo G2180 Tripod Head for the wife for her new spotting scope to keep her spotting scope system under seven pounds. Helping her carry with ease when we are out and about in the field. The ease of using this tripod head is just amazing it just handles so smoothly. I actually replaced my lesser tripod head I use for my cannon camera and 100-400 mm canon lens with the Gitzo G2180 Tripod Head.
