Vanguard Endeavor HD 20-60x82 Angled Spotting Scope
Longcove from Titusville, FL
Before getting to the scope let me say that I was impressed with the Eagle Optics service and the scope was delivered promptly.
I'm a keen birder but birding is not my only interest so I cannot justify the expense of a top of the line scope. Therefore, I researched the mid level scope reviews. The 82A got generally good reviews and was scope of the year, 2013, on one site. This combined with the reasonable price made me decide on the 82A from Eagle Optics.
The scope is very bright and the image quality is excellent at X20. As a birder this is where I will use it mostly. At higher magnifications, above X40, chromatic abberation creeps in but not badly enough to make the scope unusable.
In low light the 82mm objective provides a bright image which makes bird identification easier in more difficult conditions.
I have just done a side by side comparison with a top of the line Swarovski owned by my birding friend. At X20 the 82A was as good and certainly brighter - his was a 65mm I think. At higher magnifications the Swarovski easily won, but not $4000 better I thought - but didn't say!
Problems? It would be great if Vanguard introduced a X10 to X30 eyepiece which would be more useful for birders. I think the eyepiece falls between the needs of birders and those of target shooters. It's a compromise.
I also bought the camera adapter but it is badly designed in that you either screw the camera on the adapter then screw the adapter on the scope. Or do it the other way round. This is cumbersome and difficult to do in the field. It would be much better if the adapter came apart and you could attach one lightweight part to the camera and one to the scope. Then the two parts could be slid together and the screw tightened to hold the camera in place. The Swarovski was designed this way and it is easy to connect/disconnect the camera from the scope. My first task will be to take the adapter to a machinist to modify it to make it come apart.
Overall I'm well pleased with the scope and even more pleased after making a comparison with a much more expensive one.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend both the 82A and Eagle Optics.

This scope is solidly built and its optics are comparable to much pricier brands.

The Vanguard Endeavor HD82A (20-60x82) Angled Spotting Scope is superb--period. I am an avid birder and need clarity when I identify birds in the field. The Endeavor delivers. The color is true and the amount of light the 82mm lens takes in is incredible. This scope is worth others twice the price, including the almighty Swarovski and Nikon. Focusing is very simple with both gross and fine adjustments. I spent a long time investigating many makes and models and ultimately decided to order the Endeavor. I have no regrets.
Great Spotting scope

Even better than I had hoped. It is clearer than other more expensive scopes when compared side by side.
poor quality optics
John C. from Maryland
I purchased this scope and compared it to a 20-year old Nikon scope with a 65mm lens and a 15-45 zoom eye piece. Despite the fact that the Vanguard had a greater level of magnification (20 to 60 zoom eye piece) the old Nikon scope was clearly superior. The Vanguard scope lacked definition and clarity and the color of white paper was not correct...(chromatic aberration). I suspect that scopes in this price range...mid $600s do not perform to the level I want. I returned it for a refund. I would not recommend it.
Great Service and Great Product

I ordered this Vanguard Endeavor spotting scope and was accidentally sent the wrong one. When I realized and called, the people I spoke with were very kind and apologetic. They sent out the correct scope immediately and I got the next day.
I had used the first scope and it was nice, but when I got this new one that is HD, WOW! The clarity was amazing. It is light and easy to carry while hiking. My family is enjoying our new birding toy. Thanks for a great scope at a reasonable price.
I will be suggesting this scope to others.
