Swarovski Review - 01/05/2013

by Chip F. from Michigan

I have been shopping for an excellent quality birding spotting scope for some time. I wanted a smaller scope for travel (instead of the 75-85mm). I got a good deal on a new Zeiss Diascope w/15 -45 x eyepiece. I was disappointed in the Zeiss because it had an area that was out-of-focus along the outside of the circle. I talked with both the Zeiss techs as well as the Zeiss birding authority who both told me that was the way they are designed and the blurry area would disappear at higher powers. Well, it didn't, so I sold the scope.
I had looked through a number of Swarovski scopes over the years and was always impressed with their edge to edge crisp focus and overall quality. I really like the scope except for a couple things. First, I wish the eyepiece had a wider angle of view for scanning. And, the focus knob on my scope seems to be too easy to turn. I don't know if all Swarovski's are like this, or if mine is looser than others. It's okay now (in cold weather) but I am concerned that it will loosen up too much when it is hot and humid.

The Lighter Scope - 04/01/2010

by Ron from Grand Junction, Colorado

The Swarovski 65 mm STS HD straight spotting scope surely beats the 80 mm Leupold scope it replaces. Lighter to carry, quicker to mount onto the tripod, more solid once there (screw mounts tend to loosen and rattle and if not watched can drop off), and with the 20x to 60x zoom lens gives a somewhat sharper image at lower powers and vastly improved image at higher powers than the Leupold does. The focus ring requires a greater arm reach, but I'm getting accustomed to it. The little sighting tube on the side actually works to reduce the time it takes to get onto a bird. It seems that two pegs for a "gunsight" in the same location would allow even faster locating. I'm happy so far with the scope and would recommend it.

Excellent Optics - 03/16/2010

by Lawrence from Reinholds, PA

I recently purchased the Swarovski 65mm STS HD spotting scope for recreational bird watching. We elected the angled eye piece which greatly assists in sharing the scope with others. The clarity and sharpness of the bird from a considerable distance is amazing! Colors are more vibrant and "tuffs" such as those on the tuffted puffin are very obvious to the observer. Yea, it is expensive, but my dad always said that you get what you pay for and it is very true with this outstanding scope.
