Excellent Spotting Scope! - 08/20/2015

by Derek from NY

As an avid birder I find that we are faced with many options when looking to purchase high-end, precision optics. For me it all comes down to best bang for my buck and Meopta solved my decision making process when they made the Meostar S2 Spotting Scope. The 82mm high-definition glass construction delivers a truly outstanding observation experience with crisp imagery even at a great distance. The design is ergonomically pleasing as well with a single, large focus ring located in the center of the body allowing for quick focus during those time sensitive situations. I guess it’s all preference but I personally don’t like fumbling around with two focus rings (fine and coarse). I have used my Meostar S2 in a variety of field conditions along with travels through several countries and I can tell you that this product is built to last. My job places me constantly in the field in variable weather conditions and I’ve never had an issue with fog or water intrusion. Meopta offers two eyepieces for this scope, the 30x-60x or the 20x-70x. I use the 30x-60x but have had the pleasure of looking through the 20x-70x as well. Both deliver a superior view but I find that I generally keep my power in the 30x-40x when I’m birding. I’ll end with saying that I’ve done side-by-side comparisons with the “big name” spotting scopes and in the end I’m glad that I’m the one with the Meostar S2.

I'm using this scope with Meopta's excellent 30-60x WA zoom. It is a truly top-notch scope equal to the best comparable scopes out there. When deciding on a purchase, I had this scope side by side with a Swarovski ATM 80 HD with 25-50x and I liked the Meopta better. In terms of brightness and resolution they were about equal. Actually, the Meopta's resolution edged out the Swarovski because it goes to 60x rather than 50x. But the Meopta definitely had better color and contrast. Just a great, crystal clear view. The focus is stiffer than the Swarovski, but also faster, which works really well. As an added bonus, the Meopta costs less than the comparable Swarovski, Zeiss, Leica scopes. Check this one out!
