Well first things first, this is not an Alpha scope, however if like me your looking to upgrade from a lower cost achromatic spotter (also a Celestron) without emptying your bank account then its a rather nice buy.Nothing much to complain about, good construction and finish, outstanding optics that are sharp to within 5% of the FOV edge ,colour saturation and contrast are very good. The two speed focuser though a bit stiff in the course mode is smooth and precise, the zoom eyepiece is very usable and the ability to use other eyepieces is a nice feature, views with my TeleVue Radians were outstanding Two minor complaints are that the stock zoom is a bit on the snug side to remove and replace, the screw on metal eyepiece cover is long winded to remove and replace, also its easy to mark the black anodizing on the eyepiece, a simple plastic push on cover would have been far better.These are minor things though as its clear that the money has gone into the optics. Made by Synta Optical half way around the world, shipped to a North American retailer and it sells for $400,complete with case and with a colour free APO type performance, whats not to like?.

I terms of resolution I cannot imagine getting much better, maybe I am fooling myself. If you have a new ten dollar bill, take it out and find a very good magnifying glass and you might be able to read the words above Hamilton "The United States of America Ten Dollars The United States of America." With the power set at 36 I could read this at about 40 feet. At the minimum focus distance with the power set at 16 I can count the lines that make up the pupil of Hamilton's eye.
Out side I had no difficulty identifying a lesser scaup at what I estimated to be 600 meters. At 120 meters I could see a sand-hill crane's pupil.
Color rendition is great and I have not noticed CA. Bright as can be to about 36 power but then drops off a bit. Resolution is pretty constant across the power and edge to edge resolution is excellent until you get past 30 power. Sweet spot is good all the to 48.
Smooth focus!
If you are like me and cannot dole out the big bucks for the big names optics do not overlook Celestron.

I haven't compared this scope to any others, but the quality of the image is excellent up to 30 X and still quite good beyond that. The scope seems to be solidly built--as far as I can see the body is made of metal and not polycarbonate as other inexpensive scopes. The only negative point is the focuser. This scope has a dual focuser: a coarse (fast) one and a more precise (and slower) one. I like this design, and the precise focuser is very smooth; however, the coarse focuser has some very rough spots, ie spots where it is difficult to turn. I hope it will get smoother with time and use--perhaps older users of this scope can share their experience?

I just picked this scope up after months of research. The image easily stands up to the high end scopes for three to four times the price. Super bright on cloudy days, crisp and great colour...absolutely floored me. You do get some draw backs with the price. It weighs nearly twice as much a similar high end scope. The main focus nob requires a lot of turning over long distances. That said both the regular and fine focus knobs are very smooth.
