Very good for a compact scope - 09/22/2014

by Bill S. from Los Alamos, NM

This is a pretty good little scope. It is not much bigger or heavier that a pair of binoculars and is ideal when traveling light. Brightness and sharpness are very good. The ED glass does indeed control chromatic aberration well. The scope is well made but the lens covers are loose. It is nearly ideal for its intended purpose but would be far better with a fixed-power wide-angle eyepiece giving it 20 or 25 power.

Note that almost all zoom scopes on the market today have a zoom ratio of 3:1 and a field of view ratio of around 2:1 so obviously the apparent field decreases as the power decreases, cancelling part of the advantage of lowering the power. It may be true that some 1950s designs, such as the B&L Balvar, did not do this. I don’t remember.

field of vision of variable power scope - 03/11/2012

by ralph from 8660 westview rd, brookings,sd 57006

in zooming thru the various powers of the scope the field of vision becomes smaller and smaller making it very difficult to look at. I wondered if the scope was in fact damaged. I have for over 30 years used a B&L 15-60 power without that field of vision problem while zooming. I would not recommend the scope I tried to anyone.
