Swarovski offers a variety of eyepieces to make sure you are perfectly equipped for any situation. The 30x wide-angle eyepiece comes with features important for protection---a locking bayonet connector and protective covers. Keeping the lens clean is considerably easier with the non-stick SWAROCLEAN coating. Swarovski provides a limited lifetime warranty on this eyepiece.

I purchased my Swarovski ATS 80 HD scope with the 20-60 eye piece, and after a year added the 30 power wide angle. I love 30 power eye piece because of its eye relief and its apparent exit pupil size, which allows the eye to look in at an angle, which sometimes happens when a group is getting quick looks at a bird. This combination allows quick acquisition of a bird and allows practical acquisition of raptors in flight and the ability to follow them. The eye piece is very bright and sharp.
On trips birders would often prefer to enjoy my scope views to those of the guide with his quality scope. I seldom need more than 30 power or conditions don't allow it.

Perhaps 90% of the time, a 30X fixed power ocular is the optimal choice for birding. This gives a substantial jump over what one can see with even an 10X binocular, while most of the time, greater than 30X only magnifies heat shimmer. The very wide field this ocular offers at 30X matches or exceeds what most zoom oculars would show at 20X, including even the current Swarovski 20-60X. Sharpness is superb, as is contrast. Eye relief, including for someone with very thick eyeglasses, is excellent. The one potential alternative, but likely to be more expensive, will be the Swarovski 25-50X pending for later in 2009. Occasionally, one would be able to use the 31-50X powers with that, but particularly for the smaller ATS65 series, the 30X likely remains that best choice, and one I have not regretted since I acquired it along with my ATS65HD several years ago.
