Good but not Great - 04/28/2014

by Michael E. from Colorado

While I am a very dedicated Vortex user, I have two binos, two spotting scopes, and two tripods from Vortex, I am not overly impressed with this rangefinder. As usual, the Ranger is put together very well and is super durable, very clear glass, and easy to read display, its light weight and the correct size. However....I was very disapointed in the response time. It takes seconds to display a read out even at short ranges. Closer to 3 and 4 seconds at longer ranges. Also it says ranges out to 1000 yards and 400 on an animal, I struggled to get reading past the 300 yard range on deer and elk. I guide deer hunts on the plains of Colorado and being able to range deer out past that 300 yards is exstremely important. I tried numerous times to get ranges on trees and building and never saw a range over 600 yards. So long story short, quality made and durable...yes, nothing short of what to expect from Vortex, but ranging ablity.....its got a long ways to go to compete with some of the other rangefinders on the market. Unfortunately I had to sell mine ( to a target shooter ), and purchase a competitor product. However, I will be looking forward to the next generation of Vortex rangefinders to test them out, maybe in a binocular????

This is an Exceptional piece of equipment! Vortex has bested it's competition by a long long ways! The Ranger is not only easy to use but is very light wieght and easy to carry. Moreover, it's waterproof and has the famous Vortex Lifetime Warranty you would expect from much more expensive equipment.I applaude Vortex for taking thier time and getting it right. Thanks!
