This ThermaCELL appliance will only be delivered via FedEx Ground.
Tested, approved, and used by the U.S. Army, this lightweight, cordless, and portable unit eliminates the need for messy mosquito repellents when you head outdoors. The matte finish and quiet on/off button allows you to avoid detection in the field while the narrow, ergonomic grip ensures a comfortable fit in the hand. Operating on a single butane cartridge, the ThermaCELL portable appliance heats a mat which releases a synthetic copy of a natural insecticide. Each mat provides up to four hours of protection against mosquitos and the butane cartridge works for up to 12 hours. The unit establishes a 15 x 15 foot zone to provide up to 98% protection from mosquitos, black flies, sand flies, and other insects.
a great product

This little box has allowed us to enjoy our yard for the last few mosquito seasons. We live right next to dense New England woods and without this machine or slathering on DEET could only get outside bug-free on windy or very lucky Summer days. Initially I bought it for my wife who spends a lot of time in the garden but we both use it now and have told each other over and over again how it does the job. It does keep the mosquitos at bay (and flies too I think); if you go upwind of it or more than about 12-15 feet away downwind the bugs are waiting for you, you also discover when the disposable pad is about spent because one by one they start attacking you again.
We both are very sensitive to chemical scents and pollutants and neither of us have a problem with this, it has a faint smell that is neither good nor bad. We haven't tried it on a hike yet, will one of these days, but it seems to take a while for it to clear an area so we set it out ten minutes before we go out and I'm not sure it could keep up while walking. It does work if you move slowly though, like when working a garden. The pads last maybe two hours each, the butane carts longer. It fires up (a barely perceptible orange spot visible through a small hole) with no problems and the little cage gets just hot to the touch. After 2-3 years I can vouch for its reliability too. A wonderful product, worth the expense.
What? No more bug spray?
Chris from Milwaukee, WI
Mosquitoes are my bane. Bug spray, applied liberally, has done a fairly good job at keeping them away. But it also keeps other people away and gets in my hands so it gets in my food and drink. Worst of all, bug spray can damage my astronomy equipment. So I have to balance being eaten with doing damage to why I'm enjoying the great outdoors in the first place.
But then comes Thermacell. It's easy to use, nothing gets on my hands, and IT WORKS. Sure, there might be the tough errant mosquito that still makes it through, but that's it. Only the errant bug. Aside from ther there's no mess, no bother, no noise. Just a thing of beauty.
If there's a detriment its that the unit is a bit bulky. I lay it on a table when I use it, but I don't see the practicality of putting it in a holster and hiking with it. And while it can't really be called a detriment, it doesn't make any noise. You need to remember to turn it off. ;-)
