Ultra portable telescope - 06/18/2009

starstarstarstarstar by Yang Lim from Singapore

I was looking for a ultra compact pocket telescope for my overseas business trips and holidays. Also, being influenced by the movie Bourne Identity, where 'Jason Bourne' the protagonist of the movie was using a monocular, I decide to buy my first monocular. The Zeiss 6x18 monocular had specifications that were very good. Having long eye relief, high quality optics, extremely small, good magnification and exceptional close focus, I chose to buy it though it is not cheap.

All I can say is 'Wow!'. The images are razor sharp and extremely high contrast especially on-axis (central portion). Objects take on the High Definition (HD) view that is even better than my own vision! Trees, leaves, sort of pop out because of the immense sharpness and contrast. Initially I was a bit not used to it because it looked 'fake'...but actually it is the hallmark of Zeiss optics; superb sharpness and contrast for on-axis. The image is so clean, which means almost neglible optics defects like astigmatism, spherical aberration and glare. There is very low amount of chromatic aberration but that is expected as it does not have extra low dispersion glass.

Also it is very light, and when held with two hands, the image is very stable. I use my left hand to focus and to cover my left eye (I keep both eye open when viewing so as not to be fatigued). Focusing is also a breeze because of the quick push pull. Lastly not to mention of its super close focus and ability to be used as a magnifier. Looking at small insects is fantastic!
