Great for Travel - 07/29/2010

I'm an avid birder, and I purchased the Nikon 5x15 monocular for business travel in particular. It stows easily in a corner of my brief or computer case. I have already used it while traveling extensively in the Great Basin area. The optics are excellent and exceeded my expectations in clarity and resolution when compared to the 8x optics that I normally use. The wide field of view (9 degrees) helps find and track moving objects, especially fast moving birds, and the close focus is an added bonus for me. However, the 15 mm objective is somewhat limiting in lower light levels as would be expected. The monocular seems rugged in construction and well made, but in the next iteration, I would recommend that Nikon make it water proof and fog proof.

I purchased this monocular for my son who is in the US Army. He stated that he needed something small and powerful so he could detect possible threats to his unit. After one look through the unit, he was impressed. He stated that this will help him immensely in the field. Good work Nikon and thanks from the parent of a US Soldier.

Excellent compact optic - 05/16/2010

I wear glasses and tried other monoculars. I even tried the Zeiss 10X and did not like it. So I finally decided to try this Nikon and it's wonderful. Plenty of eye relief even with sunglasses over my regular glasses.

It is razor sharp.... and I have a lot of high end optics to compare with. It really is very very sharp.

You might wonder if 5x is worth bothering with. Yes, 5X is not bad at all and I am very happy to have traded power for comfort. Lower magnification also means the focus is not so touchy.

Bottom line, if you wear glasses this is a great monocular and will probably give you want you want. I feel it is a bargain compared to the Zeiss.
