Although these binoculars are very highly rated for birding by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, I was very surprised to see how well they worked on night sky objects on a recent trip to Arizona. Even with the comparatively small objective size (for astronomy), I was able to easily pick up some faint objects I didn't expect. For birding, I find their larger field of view, brighter image (in the shade) and smaller magnification easier to use than 10x binoculars.
Good binoculars, except for eyecups
Huan N. from NY
The build, clarity, and operation are excellent. However, the eyecups are lousy: jerky to adjust in/out and many times I couldn't twist them to the tallest level. Minus 2 stars for this. Otherwise, excellent bins!
Excellent Image Quality On Par With Any Binocular
Jeff from Oregon
I've been comparing dozens of 8x42 binoculars over the past couple years -- Swarovski, Nikon, Vortex, Minox, Eagle Optics, Zeiss, Leica, etc. In many reviews I've read others exclaiming about the WOW factor for particular models yet I wasn't seeing much difference among all the models I compared. I've had a pair of EO Rangers for many years which compared favorably to the top of the line models from other companies although with a narrow field of view. I finally tried a pair of Zeiss Conquest HD binoculars and the difference in image quality was noticeable -- almost a 3D clarity missing in my EO Rangers and all other models I've tried. This increased clarity isn't apparent in all lighting conditions but under forest canopy it pops out. The focus knob on the Zeiss is good, somewhat looser resistance than I like and not as good as the Minox APO-HG/HG models I've tried, but still fast and sure. The Zeiss are heavier than I like but with a good harness I can wear them comfortably for hours. And the Conquest HD is less expensive than most of the other models I've tried. I wear glasses and usually need more than 18mm eye relief but the Conquest HD, although listed at 18mm, seems to have greater eye relief than other models with that specification, e.g. Vortex Talon HD. At least for me, the Zeiss Conquest HD gives the best image quality of all the top binocular models.
Top end optics

I bought the Conquest HD 8x42 several months ago. I love them. I have too many pairs of very good binoculars. Since the purchase of the Conquests the rest of my binos have stayed on the shelf. I think I might sell them off. I have compared the Conquests directly to Swarovski 8.5X42, the Conquest took them on and blew them away. If you buy them be sure to get Vortex rain guard and lens covers. The ones they come with are a joke. The fine folks at EO can set you up with the proper fit here. Eye relief is a bit long, but I never use eye-cups. I brace my brow with my index finger. That's just me. Optics are absolutely stunning, depth of view beats out my Nikon SE porros. No need to spend more unless you have cash to burn. I use them every day for hours on end doing surveys and weight has never been an issue.
Solid binocs; missing the mark at this price point on some items
Bob H. from Santa Rosa, CA
* Very nice feel in the hands; grip works well with hands and gloves * Smooth feel on focus * Not smooth when adjusting the eyecups in and out * Also have a Zeiss scope; be helpful to have the focus be in the same direction especially since I'm interchangeably using them every few minutes * Neck strap is a good width, and the cushion for the neck has friction and provides adequate padding * More chromatic aberration than I expect at this price * Caps for both ends just plain suck. Both ends are hard to align and put on. The top caps are hard to easily remove. The bottom caps come off very easily; too often don't know they are off and almost touch the objectives.
Yeah, these are good
Oregon Vince from Oregon
These have that extra clarity that gives images depth. They go beyond simply being sharp. I neary bought the Nikon Monarch 7's which are very sharp and clear but these revealed more color. The cheaper (bur very respectable) binocs image seemed flat by comparison... even though the image was very very detailedd.
The eye releif was also greater than other optics specified at the same 18mm. I actually had to extend the cups a little. If you do not wear glasses you will need to get the taller eye cups that I'm told Zeiss will provide free.
Forget gripes about lens caps etc. These are superb optics that go beyond sharp.
BTW, the cheaper Zeiss Terra's were not so great. I do not recommend them. If you want real Zeiss spend the extra and get these.

Love the binoculars. With more marsh birding, I upgraded from Monarch 5s. I am amazed at how distinct the birds are. Really glad I bought these binoculars. Some reviewers have expressed disappointment about the lens covers. I probably have less experience with binoculars than they do, but I find them satisfactory and convenient. I wear glasses. Excellent eye relief.

I have two words - must buy! With the rebate program, this become a very good buy for the quality. After looking through about seven pairs of binoculars like the Nikon Monarch 7 and Zeiss Terra, the Conquest are unbelievable. I didn't know binoculars could be this good. The brightness, clarity, colors, eye relief (with and without my glasses), feel in hand all make for a very enjoyable experience. I didn't realize how much detail I was missing till I looked through these binoculars. The two areas that need improvement are the rainguards and lens covers. The rainguards are made of rubber and tend to stick to the surfaces of the eyepieces. I just leave these off while birding. The lens covers fit loosely into the lens space. They tend to fall out rather easily which is why I keep them tethered to the binoculars. I wish Zeiss would use the tethered system for the Terras on the Conquests.
Overall, I love, love these binoculars.
Better than expected for birding.
Ted from Boston
I bought mine barely used on ebay for about half price--super lucky, as they were the only used Conquest HD's listed. After reading some reviews, I had my doubts, but figured I could always sell them if I didn't like them. My initial impression upon first looking through these was "yeah, that's pretty darn good, but not sure it's worth $1K". I was also mildly bothered by not getting comfortable eye position right off the bat. But after a few more tests, I've really come to appreciate these binos. Image is gorgeous, sharp, and bright, and I now find my eye placement easily. Prior to buying these, I'd been mostly using a German glass (Docter Optics--former Zeiss factory in Jena, 10x42's), comparable in price/quality to Conquests. But, I've found I'm reaching for these Conquests instead, because they feel great! Focusing is easy and smooth, diopter setting works great (stays in place, even tho no diopter lock), and these feel solidly made. The objective lens covers have received some criticism by others, but I have no complaints thus far. The rain cover does not come off easily, but for me this is a matter of getting used to. When I'm birding, I've usually got my covers off anyway. My bigger concern is protecting the lenses when not using them, or when they're kicking around in my truck with all my other gear. I'm very happy and impressed and won't be selling these any time soon. Even thought I didn't buy these here, I highly recommend Eagle Optics--they are an excellent company with excellent service and prices.
Fabulous customer service
Syd T. from Massachusetts
The staff at this company could not have been more wonderful. I had questions and concerns about my order and they responded promptly. They were professional and took a lot of time with me.As it turned out, I had to return the binoculars and they took them back without question. They then tried to trouble shoot with me in order to find a pair that worked better. Plus the sales and return departments were in good communication with one another. I highly recommend this company
Eagle Optics Great Company
Monte T. from Irvine, California
I'm not much on writing a review, and don't typically, but Eagle Optics was fantastic in my entire purchase. I had purchased Zeiss 8x42 Conquest HD Binoculars.
My call to ask a couple questions was handled professionally and well. My order arrived quickly. And all was in order.
My purpose in purchasing new binoculars was to replace what I have been using for over 20 years. The new Zeiss are different nowadays and I found them of excellent quality, but for me were not as comfortable as I had in my old Zeiss.
Therefore I chose to return them. Minutes after being received by Eagle Optics (I had sent them back with full tracking capability) I received an email that they had indeed received my package. And, quickly refunded my credit card and informed me by email of that as well.
I feel that a company that is good on customer support, quick shipping, a reasonable return policy, and keeping me informed immediately of the received return and quick refund deserves a positive review.
I've purchased two other pairs of binoculars and my spotting scope through them, and they have always, over all these years, been there for me and showed high customer support in the process.
Great Binocular with a few drawbacks
Bruce from Indiana
The performance of this binocular is outstanding. It provides a bright and crisp image and I would recommend it on that basis alone, because, after all, that's their purpose.
The drawbacks: 1. The eyepiece caps are difficult to remove and to replace. They don't slide on and off easily. 2. The end caps are worthless. The only time they stay on is when the binoculars are in the case. Consequently, they provide no protection while walking through the woods or while handling in any fashion. 3. The eye relief is designed for those who wear eyeglasses. Others (like myself) will have to learn to rest them against the top of the eye socket and position your head as if you are looking upward through them. Until one gets accustomed to it, this makes for some discomfort when scanning for longer periods.
Ziess Conquest 8x42 HD
Yooper from Upper Michigan
I bought the Zeiss Conquest after doing tons of research and making quite a few phone calls to Eagle Optics. The open box deal made these binoculars a no brainer. EO's service and advice is awesome. I certainly could not tell this was a open box, and the warranty is the same as new. I've been using a pair of Pentax DCF SP 10X43 for years and love them, but I wanted an 8x binocular. The Conquests are definitely an upgrade in optical quality. The Zeiss are very sharp, fast and easy to focus, and very comfortable to use. I can't put them down. I have very limited experience with the $2000+ binoculars (I've only looked through them in stores) so I can't give a relevant comparison to them, but I can say they are the best pair of binoculars I have ever spent any serious amount of time with. The depth of field is very good and it is very easy to find objects/birds and keep them in focus. They are very well built and a pleasure to hold. The case, strap, and rain guard are very nice, but the objective lens covers seem cheep and don't stay on very well. For $800 I don't think you could find a better pair of binoculars. I am extremely pleased with my purchase and would definitely recommend the Zeiss Conquest HD to anyone.
Very sharp binoculars
D. Wong from Napa, Calif
I bought the demos; like new; the optics are very good and light gathering capabilities are great. Adjustment knob is smooth and easy to use. The weight is a bit more than my last pair of binoculars; but I have gotten used to them because of the superior optics. I hate the thin, flimsy objective lens covers which are not snug and don't stay on. Overall, very happy with the improved birding...at a good price.
Herb M. from Harman, West Virginia
I purchased these binoculars as a reward for achieving a weight reduction contract. I liked my old binoculars but I love these. I am very nearsighted and they work great with my glasses. I participated in a rainy Christmas bird count recently and the rain did not hamper my visibility. The image is bright and clear to the edge of the glass even in low light. They focus easily and well. I think this will be my life bins. Truly, they are a best buy. I highly recommend them.
Zeiss Conquest HD
Ajay from Columbus Ohio
I had been looking at these glasses for a while when Zeiss decided to have this promotion with $100 rebate. I jumped at the opportunity and I am glad I did.
I am looking forward to taking them with me to Point Pelee in October for few days of birding.
Some will be daunted by the weight (that’s the price of quality) HD glass is heavier than regular glass. I also thought that the objective lens covers do not match the quality of the rest of the binocular.
