A Best in Class Binocular - 04/03/2014

by Elias Z. from United States

I'm a big fan of 6x binoculars; they've been my favorites for a long time. I have an Eagle Optics Platinum Ranger 6x32 and I love it. The Viper HD is quite a bit more expensive, but I was intrigued enough to get it. Sure enough, it lived up to the billing on the Eagle Optics website and then more. It has much, much less CA (chromatic aberration, the bluish and purple tinging at the edges of objects that shows up in many binoculars) than the Platinum Ranger; it's much more rugged and generally a much higher build quality. When you hold it it exudes fine craftsmanship and quality. It even compares well against my son's Zeiss Victory 8x32 FL, being just as bright and having very nearly the CA levels of the $2000 Zeiss.

Before you dismiss this bino as "only 6x," give it a chance. The 6x still brings you remarkably close, and gives you a much steadier, much brighter, and larger field of view. (I can often keep up with close birds even while they're in flight with this bino, something that my birdwatching pals usually can't do with their 8x and 10x binos.) The 6x also gives you a superbright exit pupil helping you ID those wood warblers in the shady parts of trees. At $550 this binocular gives you very nearly the same views as $2000 "alpha" (Zeiss/Swarovski/Leica). It's easily one of the best bargains around.

Very highly recommended.

Amazing value - 03/07/2014

by Bob G. from Tampa, FL

These are amazingly bright, clear, and compact binoculars. I compared them to Zeiss Victory 8x32 and Zeiss Victory 8x42 HT binoculars at 3 and 4 times the cost of the Viper Vortex 6x32 HD binoculars. For my eastern whitetail deer hunting, I decided to keep the Viper Vortex binoculars. They are lightweight, clear and have the right amount of magnification to provide a stable, clear view. These binoculars will be my "go to" binoculars for my hunting trips. Don't get me wrong, the Zeiss binoculars are fine instruments and I will probably buy the Zeiss 10x42 HT binoculars for my planned western hunts but 6 power magnification is ideal for the woods that I hunt in Georgia. You will be very satisfied with these binoculars which are an extraordinary value at $550.

Very good optically and mechanically + unbeatable warranty.

Looks the same but it's not - 04/23/2012

by Jae P from Ma

I own the 6x32 Viper non-HD but I wanted to try the HD version. It seemed worth the extra cost over the promotional great price to me. How could that be when they look exactly the same, comes in exactly the same package, case with the same specifications except for a little "HD" tag ??

If you are an owner of high end Zeiss, Leica, Swarovski, then you may find that the non-HD version is not quite as sharp, doesn't have that snap that you may be used to. Then for 100% increase in price, would the HD glass be worth it ? For these owners (I'm guilty of it) that are willing to spend $2000 on perfection, a $274 increase over the sale price of $275 at $549 to produce sharpness that can rival the best is a relative bargain ! In addition, the chromatic aberation is minimized, resulting in more vivid colors and less color fringing in difficult conditions.

Where the Viper HD 6x32 falls a bit short is in field curvature i.e. when the center is in sharp focus, the edges are not and vice versa. But overall I think this is a very fine pair of 6x32 that I'd be happy to carry when my 7x42 Leica or Zeiss is left at home. They are compact, steady and you'll be surprised at what you can see over a 7x or 8x.

If your eyesight is not great, you may not be able to see the difference but those with great eyes, you WILL see the difference !! It's very apparent to me.
