Great astro center focus binoculars - 09/09/2015

by James from Minnesota

There are a lot of objects in the sky that are great for observing with binoculars when you don't want to set up a telescope. I use Fujinon FMT-SX 10X50 and 10X70 for the purpose; however, I wanted some center focus binoculars to share the experience with friends and family. It's hard to find top quality porro prism models with center focus and the design of roof prism binoculars doesn't often lend itself to the kind of optical qualities that you like for astronomy. You get the best sense of what I'm referring to when any design is tripod mounted. That is no easy feat with these 10X50 Viper HDs. I happen to have a thin Pentax tripod adapter that works on these--just barely, so that is worth noting. That said, the 10X50 Viper HD is optically very good. Color fringing is minimal. There is good eye relief and extremely sharp optics with detailed images near the edge of the field. Color is vivid and contrast is very good, even in low light. Daytime images are superb in all respects. These are not inexpensive, but certainly worth the price.

Very nice! - 06/20/2013

These are fine binoculars: quick focus, great optics, solid. I can one-hand them and track that bird! The harness is something I hadn't thought I'd need, but it works really well with these. I bought a second pair for my wife. The only complaints I have is the Vortex tripod adapter lacks a second hole for a set screw to keep it from twisting on the quick-release plate (I returned it); and the barrels are so close together that I had to use a needle-nose pliers to attach the adapter. But I don't really need a tripod for this with the harness. Worth it!
