Two years ago, I was preparing for a 5-day backpacking and birding trip and wanted a quality pair of compact binoculars I could use for birding when I was camping and for bowhunting in the fall.
I had the chance to compare these side-by-side with Zeiss and Leica and Swarovski compacts in both sunlight and shade at the wonderful Audubon sanctuary near Portland, Or. After much time and consideration, I decided there wasn't enough difference between these and the more expensive brands to warrant the extra cost. I am always pleased with the image these provide when I bring them to my eyes, and I've been leading birding tours for over 20 years, so I've seen every kind of binocular there is to see. I also have 20/10 vision so my eyes are hard to please when it comes to good glass. These are very good glass.
Because I also use these for bowhunting 3-4 months each year, they are exposed to a lot of rugged use and extreme conditions that most birders won't put them through. Recently, a strap lug broke off mine and I returned them to Vortex for repair. They were replaced with a brand new pair at absolutely no cost to me, in about 10 days time. Thanks Vortex, for not only a great product at a reasonable price, but for customer service that is second to none.

Very pleased with these. Small, light and good ergonomics. As usual the Eagle Optics experience was great.

These are the first small bins I've used where I can find the bird instantly, just as with larger bins. The image is clear and bright. Astonishingly, they have the same width of view as my Zeiss 10x40s, at least they way they sit on my glasses. When I compare both near and far views, the width is identical. I can't wait to take these backpacking.
Perfect Backcountry Binocs!

I am a birder and own multiple pairs of binoculars, but all my compact pairs were given to me by others and do not meet my standards for optical quality. I needed a pair for a recent backpacking trip and bought these, sight-unseen, based on the specifications and reviews. They were perfect for my purposes and I will use them time and again for years to come. I have a pair of good quality, much larger 8x32's, but the Vortex Viper beats them in terms of clarity, ease of adjustment, and of course, portability. I cannot tell the difference in the field of view between the 28's and 32's. The Viper is very comfortable to hold, easy to clean, and durable. I cannot recommend them highly enough!

I purchased these binoculars for my wife's birthday. The optical clarity is superb. They seem to be well made and I expect them to last a long time. Overall, I think it was a great purchase.

First, these are more compact than mid-sized. They are smaller than you think and much smaller than the Viper 6x32. They have more eye relief than any other compacts I have tried but a bit less than the Viper 6x32 (even though the number is the same.)
The sharpness is very very good. They are on par with my Nikon 8x20 LxL and my Elite 7x26, but better eye relief. The focus has no slop and it's not too course or too fine. They focus down very nice.
These probably exhibit more flare than larger, expensive binocs but it's generally not a problem under average circumstances - only when the sun is close to your field of view. If I shade them with my hand they're good. Of course the field of view is also smaller than big binocs but I'm OK with it. These are keepers.
Overall, these are great binocs that I will use a lot. They are comfortable with glasses, yet compact and light weight. These are the ones I always grab.
Good product!

Great viewing experience. Wide, clear view even with my glasses on. Lightweight and easy on the neck. Compares favorably with my Bausch & Lomb Elite 8X42.
Very nice glasses

I bought these for my SO to use for backpacking, mountaineering and ski touring. I have a pair of Nikon Premier 8x20's (which are great), and figured that it would be nice to have a second pair of trail glasses with a larger objective for dawn and dusk use. The Viper 8x28's have a crisp and bright image, very little pincushioning and virtually no edge distortion. The optics are generally equivalent to the Premiers in daylight, and the larger objective/exit pupil is very nice in lower light. Of course, no compact glass performs like a full size quality bino, but these are darned close. The fit and feel is very nice. Note that these binos do not fold down as small as 8x20 compacts from Nikon, Zeiss, Leitz, Swaro, etc. We are fully satisfied with these binos.

Being an owner of two Nikon binoculars - an E Series 8x30 and a compact 8x25 - I had the opportunity to compare these with the Viper. The Viper 8x28 is clearly superior to the 8x25 Nikon; and stacks up very favorably with the "classic" Nikon E Series glass. The great advantage of the E 8x30 is its three dimensional, wide field view - very easy on the eyes and satisfying in every way. The Viper is actually a tad sharper than the Nikon E - and has noticeably longer eye relief - making it a good choice for an eyeglass wearer like myself. It is also much more compact than the Nikon E. I am enjoying the Viper: very solid, moderate in weight, and compact for it's 28 mm objective size - and recommend it as a worthy choice for general use.

I was looking for a waterproof alternative to my all-time favorite compact binocular, the Bushnell 7x26 Elite. The Vortex Viper 8x28 is not quite as bright, but it does focus significantly closer than the Bushnell, which is a boon to folks that enjoy watching dragonflies and butterflies. I wear the Viper when kayaking or fishing. This is a handsome looking instrument that is well built and feels good in my large hands. The 8x28 focuses very smoothly and renders a bright, clear image for such a compact design. If this was offered as a 6x28, I would buy it! I have recommended this model to several friends, and have loaned it out to birding companions (all were favorably impressed). The only suggestion for improvement is for the addition of tethered objective covers.
Thank you Eagle Optics for Compact Vortex Viper

I am recovering from a shoulder injury and cannot use my full size binoculars due to weight on neck and shoulder. Eagle Optics recommended this 8 x 28 binocular which has the viewing quality and ease of use of my full size binoculars. Now I can go birding without pain afterward and my shoulder is healing! They were well worth the price and the service and advice was great! I love having a compact pair!
