Excellent glass. Smooth focusing and very sharp image. I love the feel of the binocular in my hands. I stepped down from a 10 X 50 binocular to the Swarovski 8 X 42, because I could not hold the 10X steady enough. The 8X magnification suits me much better with a more stable image. They are also excellent in low light. The objective lens covers are not practical and flop around in windy conditions. I never use them.

I've been birding with Nikon Monarchs for the last few years. I finally took the leap and went with the Swarovski SLC 8 x 42 HD bins. The Nikons were good but the Swarovskis are exceptional. They are excellent in low light situations. Clear, bright and everything you would expect in a top of the line bino. I don't regret the investment one bit. They may be the last binos I ever buy.

I am a field biologist. These are essential for me to quickly ID birds in flight, neo-tropical migrants and non breeding locals that are playing hide and go seek in the creosote and cactus. The crisp image makes the difference especially when the warblers are coming through town. I have not had the EL's or the competing brands before so I can not compare and contrast the differences. But I love my HD SLC's. I also like the lens protectors as they are easy to get on and off fairly quickly in the field, and most importantly they cut down on the cleaning intervals. These are light for me but I am a tall guy and use a shoulder harness.
I hemmed and hawed about 8x vs. 10x and I am happy with the 8x for the desert. I think a guy could go either way though. I like the close focus for viewing lizards and insects too.
Eagle Optics was also a pleasure to buy from. Every thing arrived well packaged and on time

As a biologist I use my bins every day for survey work. They get stuffed into my backpack, banged around on my hip or dropped into a dry-bag when I'm out on the water. Without a single doubt these SLC 8x42 HD's are the best investments I have ever made.
I selected the Swarovski's after comparing them to the 8x42 Leica HD's-- optically they were virtually identical, but I preferred the 'stickier' grip, focus speed, and eye relief of the Swaro's. 3 months later I don't regret the decision one bit!
Pros: - No distortion, sharp edge to edge, and absolutely NO chromatic aberration. - Massive field-of-view. When scanning a horizon or working off a boat, the field of view through these bins makes work a real pleasure-- your eyes can wander through the frame without 'blackouts' or any distortion throughout the view. - Compact - Incredibly bright - Bomb-proof build quality. One thing I especially like is how recessed the front elements are into the metal housing. There's at least 1cm of depth to protect the front elements! - Undeniably perfect customer service and warrantee support. Shortly after purchasing these I problem with the diopter mechanism while in the field and called customer service for help. Within minutes I was speaking directly with their SLC repair technician-- she determined it was indeed 'not right' and had me send in the bins. The very next day Swarovski sent me back a brand-new pair, next-day, no questions asked.
Cons: - Same price as 3 months rent.
Best for: - Any professional/hunter/every-day-bins person the minute he/she can afford it.
If you are like I was 4 months ago, wavering about buying a ~$300-500 pair of Monarch X Ranger ED or Viper HD's... they are very fine binoculars that I have experience with. But are you planning on using them almost every day? Using them for longer than an hour's stroll through the woods? Buy these and never look back.

I recently sold my 8.5x42 EL binoculars and purchased the new 8x42 HD SLCs. The ELs do hold their value. I got almost what I bought them for years ago).
I am an admitted tool/optics junkie. I have had many previous pairs (Ziess 10x40, Lieca 8x42, Nikon Premier LX, and the 8.5x42 EL's. The new ones are really the best. They have great ergonomics (unlike the ELs). A good focus knob (also unlike the ELs). At one point I was given a new pair of Nikon Premiere LX by Nikon due to a mix up on a repair. I liked the focus and the light gathering as well as the reduced weight over the original model. I used them in preference to the EL's for a number of years.
When the new SLCs came out they seemed to be smaller, fit my hands better, had a focus knob that was as good as the Nikon's, had both superior eye relief and close focus to anything offered by Leica or Ziess, and had fluorite HD lenses to eliminate chromatic aberration, as well as all 4 of the lens coatings patented by Swarovski.
I am in love. They are a pleasure to use. After many other pairs I think these are the nicest and best I have ever used. I have been birding a lot more often just because of how much I enjoy using them.
