Pentax DCF SP 8x32 Binocular

My wife and I are avid birders, and for several years now I've been using the Pentax DCF SP 8x32 as my primary binoculars. I prefer the 32mm objective for general use, since it allows a smaller and lighter binocular, easier to hold to my eyes and carry for long periods. The Pentax has all the required features: phase corrected prisms, fully multicoated lenses, waterproof, etc., but at a reasonable price. The view is excellent, with a wide field (almost 400' at 1000 yards), very sharp and high resolution. It compares favorably with many more expensive binoculars, and is quite close to the view through my wife's Leica 8x32's.

Given the excellent optics and the reasonable price, anyone looking for birding binoculars should have these on the list. I'm giving them 5 stars for the overall value.

I used this pair, my third 8x32, over the summer for 40 lifer birds. Very relaxed birding, I never paid attention to the optics once I found the birds. Large wide field in focus. The sharpness in the middle is a tiny bit worse than one other pair I have, but that pair has a smaller sweet spot. This issue in the field is pretty irrelevant, not a deal breaker.

Weight, ergonomics and handling are good. Just big enough for my hands..long hands, but not wide. A large handed user may prefer an 8x42.

If I were to get another 8x32, it would be the ED version of this.

I have two Pentaxes so far, and neither has caused any problems in two years. I have a tripod mount for the 10x, not really needed for the 8x, but may find use if you are in a blind or standing in one spot for raptor viewing or such.
