Happy Happy - 11/14/2013

by Patricia from Long Island New York

I was recommended to you by a fellow Audubon Society member. I just joined and needed a good pair of binoculars to enjoy the clubs outtings. I ordered the pentax and received them so fast I was able to use them on my first bird walk . I was so happy to get them so fast and they are wonderful. Easy to use and very accurate. I really love them . Thanks

Pentax DCF cs 8x42 Binocular - 03/20/2013

by verlyn t. from hoyt lakes,mn.

I really liked the quick delivery. With the diopler adjustment lever in the center by the focus knob they are fast and easy to focus them in. They are bright and clear to see with. with the focus knob a little stiffer you can lay them down and move them around they always stay in focus.

great binocular - 02/19/2013

by Richard H. from Hatfield, Pa.

My wife and I are very happy with these binoculars. Excellent viewing through these watching birds, deer and other wildlife in our backyard. Very handy and light compared to our other Pentax binocular, which we still have and use. The new binocular will be the one we now take with us on our little excursions away from home. Thank you.

Great binoculars for our Alaska trip. - 08/08/2012

by CPM from Michigan

Bought these binoculars for a trip to Alaska based on a top ranking in an online binocular review. The focus and clarity of the glaciers, scenery and wildlife was great with these binoculars. The harness strap worked well on the biking and kayak excursions. I was very pleased with the quick delivery from Eagle Optics.

Excellent Value for the Money - 05/22/2012

by Ron from Mechanicsville, MD

The Pentax DCF CS 8x42 bin is comfortable to carry and easy to use for bird watching, especially with the Eagle Optics harness strap. For once my thumbs fit right into the thumb indents and the binocular is fairly light weight for a full-size bin. Eye cups (both with and without eye glasses), lens covers, diopter adjustment, and focus knob are all functional for me. If I were to be picky, the focus knob is somewhat stiff—a hunter would probably prefer it, but as a bird watcher, I like to spin the knob.

The sweet spot in the center is truly sweet in my field tests and bird watching. This is what really counts for me, and for this reason alone, I would rate the bin as a five. The resolution (and contrast), clarity, brightness, and color transmission are excellent in the sweet spot, comparable to a couple premium binoculars I use. Pin cushioning and chromatic aberration seem minimal, but CR has never been much of a problem to me. I do not notice any eye fatigue after long periods of use. The sweet spot is fairly large on objects close in and seems to shrink a little as I focus on objects farther away. Because of the overall good field of view and depth of field, birds are easy to find and track both near and far with this binocular. It gave me a fantastic view of a male scarlet tanager well up in a tree, almost feather per feather, which I wasn’t really expecting in this price range.

I realize this account is just one person reviewing just a single binocular, used for one thing only, and is therefore anecdotal. But, I would recommend that those of you who are just starting out as birders or students on tight budgets check out this binocular; it is an excellent value for the money.

worthless strap - 09/24/2011

by Marion from NJ

Although I like binoculars, and this is the second pair I bought this year, the strap broke within two weeks on both pairs. It is really silly to save money on the strap. It's so annoying to have to ask for a replacement strap, and especially if it is no better than the one the binoculars come with.

I've seen earlier Pentex binoculars and they have much more sturdy straps.

I also feel the focus knob could be a bit easier to adjust.

Excellent product from Pentax. - 07/26/2010

by Ron from Dallas, TX

The Pentax CS 8x42 binoculars were purchased for a research project that required days of extensive hiking over rugged terrain. I chose the Pentax CS for their light weight, wide field of view and my own experience with Pentax products.

Two design flaws have come to light. First, the two intermediate eye cup detents are quite shallow, although my limited testing at these adjustments did not cause the eye cups to collapse. With the long eye relief, most people will use the eye cups fully extended, where the eye cups lock solidly. Second, the diopter adjustment, located just behind the focus knob, has no markings outside of center. This clip stop adjustment, while not a locking type, stays in place.

The CS focus from about 6 feet to infinity takes 1 1/4 turns, with good resistance. Nearly a full turn of the total rotation focuses from 12 feet down to the minimum. Depth of field, as compared to several other 8X bins, is quite good. The IP distance adjusts from 54mm to 74mm. These bins focus CCW from close to distant. The light weight and fine balance make these bins a pleasure to hold even for long sessions. These bins work wonderfully with eye glasses.

I could detect no chromatic aberrations or noticeable distortions. Contrast and color fidelity are excellent. The Pentax CS binoculars produce sharp, bright and vivid images across the entire field.

The Pentax 8x42 CS are impressive binoculars, which hold up in comparison to far pricier bins, even my Zeiss 8x42 FLs. Solid construction, great warranty, excellent optics and light weight make this binocular a best buy and highly recommended. These binoculars will see lots of field time.
