Low Weight 8x32s - Mixed Review - 10/30/2014

by Ridgerunner from Eastern Maine

At 14 oz., these may be the lowest weight 8x32s out there. I have no problem at all with them having a polycarbonate structure, as I feel that a metal structure is not necessary any more - just like carbon-fiber tripods have changed that product. With binoculars it is always that balance of optics and handling, so here are the nuts and bolts: The center clarity is sharp, sharp. However from about 70% of the field out to the edge, the field is somewhat blurry, which is a downside to me. I wear glasses, and found that the eye relief was BARELY enough for me. If someone wears glasses, and has deep-set eyes, it won't be enough. They have a very acceptable field of view at 393 ft at 1000 yds, and the color is neutral, with good contrast. Light transmission is good. I found them easy to hold, although not as nice as either Zeiss 8x32 Victorys, the 8x42 Nikon Monarchs or the Swarovski 8x25s, all of which were tried side by side with the Opticron Discovery 8x32.
Why buy this binoc? If you are looking for a very low weight 8x32, with better field of view than the compacts, but only a few oz. more in weight, these are worth checking out. The eye placement was easier than the compacts. The binoculars were likely rugged enough for anything. Incidentally they have really good eyeguards, and tethered objective covers.
Final assessment - The fuzziness towards the viewing edges, plus the less than perfect feel in the hands result in the score of four stars.
