None better - 05/04/2012

by Rick from Modesto, CA

Having owned and used all of the "alpha's" (Zeiss, Swarovski and Leica), I can honestly say that none excel the Nikon SE's for resolution and edge to edge sharpness. Unlike the above, the Nikon's leave no doubt when the image is perfectly dialed in-no back and forth motion on the focus knob required! These are also very comfortable in terms of handling and are light enough to carry for extended periods. Unbeatable at this price point (or any price point for that matter!).

Nikon 8 x 32 SE is outstanding! - 02/10/2009

by Mike Hernandez from Waco, TX

I bought a Nikon Premier 8 x 32 SE binocular eight years ago and have been able to compare it to many other high-end optics. I have never seen a better view in any other binocular. Some others were comparable for a thousand dollars more. None were so comfortable. They seem to want to sit in my hands! The view is truly superior, clear, true, bright, and sharp all over the field. You don't just see detail, you see texture.
They are tougher than you'd think. I have dropped them from about a four foot height on to a concrete floor. When I brought them up to my eyes, the view was as superior as ever. Although not waterproof, they are water resistant. I have had no trouble with leaking or internal fogging although I haven't taken them into really wet situations. Yes, they have fold down eyecups, but they are not difficult to fold and take me about one more second per side to adjust compared to twist-type eyecups. The diopter does not lock, but I just glance at it every so often and adjust it if needed (usually just slightly).
This binocular is optically as good or better than the Austrian/German brands and ergonomically far better. At this price, you simply must get them.

legendary, great value - 02/06/2009

by Dave from Vallejo, CA

As I write this, Eagle Optics has these binoculars on sale for $500. What a deal. I bought mine 3 years ago for $600, and I think they would be a great value even at $700 or more.

The strength of these binoculars is the bright sharp view out to the edge of the circle, or big "sweet spot" due to the eyepiece design. In this respect they rival or surpass even the most expensive roof prism models priced 3 times more (in my opinion). But don't take my word for it; these binos really are legendary and have many fans. These binoculars are still considered a "reference" against which other top models should be compared (see the URL below).

These days porro prism binoculars have fallen out of style. Nearly all the high-end binoculars are roof prisms, and thus people get the idea that "roofs are better than porros." But most of the porro prism binoculars are NOT made with the best precision or materials. The Nikon SE's are different. At this time I believe they are one of the only truly premium porros available. Which is not to say they are perfect. They take some getting used to. The 8X32 SE's are chunky stubby little things, but they feel good and lightweight in your hands. With all porro prisms, you need to adjust the interpupilary distance when switching focus from near to far (a lot of people don't know to do this). The cool thing is you will notice a more "3 dimensional" image compared to roof prisms, especially when focusing very close. You must accept that they are not waterproof and more fragile than roofs if dropped. I keep mine in a Pelican hard case (model 1150). The eyecups are the old-fashioned rubber style you fold up or down. They will wear out someday so getting replacements is a good idea. I wear eyeglasses and keep the eyecups folded down all the time; they have sufficient eye relief. Some people complain that the focus knob is stiff and a bit slow, especially in cold weather, but I really like the focus action. It feels like I can *PRECISELY* dial in the focus, so crisp I cannot imagine seeing the image any sharper. The view is simply superb, nice and wide. A tremendous binocular for birding.
