Falling apart in less than a year! - 05/30/2011

by Wendy from Massachusetts

Love the optics, but the outer construction is shoddy and impractical. Eyepiece cups screw up and down but cannot be removed for cleaning, and dirt gets into the threads. The protective eyepiece cover doesn't fit snugly over the eyepieces, so grit and debris inside the eyecups is inevitable if you are an active birder. Consequently, the stability and longevity of the eyecups is compromised. Also, the protective covers for the exit lenses are attached to the exterior of the binoculars with a narrow band, and the bands snapped after I had the binocs only a short time. When one of the eyepiece cups started to loosen, I sent the binos back for service. The eyecup seemed to be alright for a couple of months but then became so loose and no longer tight, and it started falling off. The exit lens covers were also replaced at that service, but the holding straps on both again snapped within only a few weeks. I will be mailing the binocs in for service again (having to pack them up and do this is in itself a big drawback)but have decided I must buy another pair, probably from another company. I really like the optical quality, the weight and feel, and the close focus of these binoculars, but the plastic parts are not durable and the eyepiece construction is impractical. I liked the price, too(I paid a bit more than the ABA price), but I guess now I am wondering if I have to pay a lot more than $300 for a solid pair of binoculars that will last longer than a year.

Great value! Sharp focus. Great for bird watching

Nice compromise - 07/12/2010

I own several mid-price pairs of binoculars, but all are 8x. So I wanted a decent 10X, and I found the Nikon Monarch 10x36. I've nothing to complain about; these are very nice binos for the price. And with 36mm objectives they are surprisingly light and compact, which is what I was looking for. Field of Vision is also very good for a 10x at 6 degrees, so aiming these binos at small birds in the forest is not a problem. I've looked through some very high priced binos like the Leica Ultravids 10x42 (pried away from friends for 15 seconds at a time), but the prices on Leicas are way out of my league. I'm pleased at how good most mid-priced binos really are!
My only real irritation with the Nikon Monarch ATB 10x36 is the small Depth of Focus; it really does take a fine touch to focus these well. But again this in NOT a premium price bino. So, overall, I'm very pleased with this pair of Nikons. They produce good quality images, are very compact and lightweight, armored and waterproof. What's not to like?

I was ready to spend more than twice this amount on the monarch X, but these were exceptionally sharp and quite a bit more compact. I find them plenty bright, and easier to fit in a jacket pocket.
