niche use binocular - 01/12/2010

by Alan Birnbaum from Frsno CA

Since I purchased my pair of Minox BD 10 x 25 BR folding roof prism binoculars six or so years ago, I find I have used them only occasionally. They are adequate for observation at longer distances, where rapid focus isn't a major issue. The BD has a very small focus wheel, that is a bit hard to turn rapidly. My Nikon LX L 8 x 20, for example, also a folding design, are far better than the Minox, largely due to an easier focus, not to mention a relatively wider and sharper field. The Nikon also incidentally carry better, due to better placement of the neck strap, which is also wider than that for the Minox. Of course, the Nikon cost twice as much (but are clearly worth it in several ways.)

I would allow that a folding binocular is NOT always the easiest one to carry. A fixed chassis binocular may actually be a better fit for a jacket pocket. So, many users probably would get more use out of the less expensive Minox BV 8x25 BRW, or similar designs from other makers, whose focusing mechanism will be much faster, and whose larger exit pupil will make usage easier.
