The BX-3 8X42 are comparable to my Zeiss Victory FL 10X32. They are as sharp and have as much contrast. They are brighter in low light of course (42 mm vs. 32 mm objective lenses). The color fidelity is the same as the Zeiss meaning perfect. The difference in money is in the Zeiss they focus faster and the feel is like butter. The Zeiss have water and oil repellant lens coatings. The Zeiss case and strap is of much better quality. The Zeiss eye lens rain guard cover has a strap attachment on both sides. The Zeiss eye rising eye cups hold position (click stops) much better. The BX-3 rain guard is attached to the strap only on the left side. These may be nit picks because in the factor most important - the image - the BX-3 is great. The best part is the value. Very very close to Zeiss quality images at a lot less money! Highly recommended.

I've owned my 8x42 Leupold Mojave bin's for about 2 years now and I've always been very pleased with them. In fact, I've often wondered why I don't see more people using them as I am still amazed at the clarity and color fidelity of these binoculars - especially considering the very reasonable price. Just today, I had an opportunity to compare my Mojave's side-by-side with the well known Vortex Viper 8x42's, and I am pleased to say that the image quality of my Mojave's was slightly better in my opinion. Sharpness was almost identical, but the Viper had some purple cast and the colors were a little more washed out it seemed. I never realized how important color fidelity was to me until I owned these Leupold Mojave's. The colors are tack sharp and right on, and it adds a lot to the viewing pleasure because what you see seems as real as it does without the binoculars in front of you.
Unless you're ready to spend over $1K on your bino's, and there are good reasons still to do just that, then I'd save your money and get a pair of these. You will be surprised, as I was, when and if you do choose to compare them to more expensive optics, and you'll probably feel like you hold a real bargain in your hands. I know I do.
I am a hobby bird watcher (not as serious a birder as some folks I come across, but I know my warblers and sparrows) and these binoculars get the job done very well and are a pleasure to use in the field. Recently, while assisting with a local Christmas bird count, my wife decided at the last minute to join me. We've both had ornithology in college, so she knows her birds, but was "stuck" using an inexpensive pair of binoculars all day that I had at the house for viewing back yard birds at the feeders. After a few hours of me trying to explain the details of a few sparrows, she looked through my Mojaves and was not happy at all. The rest of the day, she joked how she was "stuck" using crappy binoculars and it's no wonder I was seeing more species than she was! She now wants a pair just like mine.
One final note - the ergonomics of these binoculars are addicting. After using the open bridge, compact design for 2 years, it's really hard for me to go back to using conventional roof prism binoculars. Even though my Mojave's are slightly heavier than the Vipers, they feel lighter because of the open bridge and the way your hand wraps around the barrel.
