It is very difficult to try and rate any of the high end binoculars as made by Zeiss,Leica,Swarovski,and Nikon. I made several tests and evaluations of the many binoculars in the 10X range and find it hard to choose between the Zeiss 10X56 Victory FL T, the Leica Ultravid HD 10x42 and the very bright and top-of-the-line Swarovski 10x42 EL with Swarovision. If weight is your concern, then the Leica with its shorter stubby hand filling body is just perfect at least for my hands. The added cost of the Swarovski,touted by many as the "best" is too costly for my budget. I also own the Zeiss Victory which is the heaviest binocular listed as well as the Leica Ultravid,recently purchased from Eagle Optics.I am pleased with the new Leica and cannot give it any higher or lower rating than the two others listed. It comes down to what fits your needs and hands. All three models that I have listed share similar diopter adjustment located on the focus knob rather than on either the left or right barrel. I would rate the Leica to be a very sound choice with the 42mm object diameter lens. My aging eyes demand more than an 8X binocular for bird watching and hunting.

As a conservation professional and keen birder I spend a considerable amount of time with binoculars around my neck. For the past 15 years I have had a pair of Leica Trinovid 10x42 BA that has been overall excellent. I decided to upgrade to the Leica Ultravid HD 10x42 to benefit from the lighter weight of this model and the new treatment of the optic that makes the image brighter and sharper without mentioning the rain repellent effect that is also greatly appreciated. I also like better the ergonomic design of this model that the previous one. I am entirely satisfied with my Leica Ultravid HD 10x42 and I am sure that I would have been equally satisfied with the equivalent models proposed by the two other top brands based in Germany and Austria. I have several pieces of Leica equipment and I have always been satisfied by their products and by the service provided to clients when a problem arose. I decided to buy this piece of equipment from Eagle Optics as the Leica Ultravid HD 10x42 were in stock, which was not the case in the other places where I regularly source optics, because the price was the same as elsewhere, but also because of the partnership that exists between the American Birding Association (ABA) and Eagle Optics. I like the idea that the purchase of this great pair of binoculars also benefits a bird conservation organization.
Leica worth the price

Leica is all I'd hoped, and more. Five years ago I was a new birder with 30-year-old inexpensive binoculars. In researching online and talking with experienced birders, I heard that I should buy as much binocular as I could afford, after holding and trying many... I did, buying Leica, choosing the 10s over the 8s because I live in the west and wanted to see across our big skies. For daytime raptors, or early morning, late evening light gain, my Leicas beat anything I have borrowed or tried. They are lighter weight, and have sharper views than other, similar size binos also. I could not be happier with my Leicas.
