Leica quality binoculars - 10/01/2015

by William P. from Hampstead, NH

I purchased a pair of 8+12x42 Leica binoculars a few years ago and I am so thrilled with them- I went on a trip to Ireland last year and did a lot of bird watching.-- In seconds you can go from 8 to 12 power to see distant ocean birds and back for close bush or field birds.- The visual clarity is the best you can buy in my opinion.- I own 5 pairs of Leica binoculars and a Leica Spotting scope and have spent so many enjoyable hours and seasons nature and bird watching.- Thanks for a wonderful high quality product. Totally underrated Binos - 10/18/2014

by N. Jones from Colorado, USA

First, let me say that these are not the most high-tech binos you can buy (no HD glass, no water repellant lense coatings, average eye relief, etc). However, they are absolutely awesome glass. CA is noticeable on high contrast views along the very edge of the glass and they are a bit on the heavy side, but with today's excellent bino carrying systems (I use Kuiu's light system) they are easy to carry and I do not even notice them. In fact, the weight helps me hold them steady when hand-held. 8 power is one of the best views through any bino I've ever seen and I've used them ALL. Then, crank it up to 12 power and suddenly you have one of the lightest weight 12x alpha binos on the market...with tripod you'll only rarely need a spotter. The view is spectacular. I am a backcountry backpack hunter where I skimp on weight for everything in my pack. I brought these on my most 2 recent hunts and did not regret having them for one instance. Plus, they are built like a German panzer...almost indestructible. Holding them is extremely satisfying due to the superb balance and they are actually pretty compact for the ability you get from them. From a dusty, sandy antelope hunt to an extreme backpack elk hunt, these do it all. The variable power turns some off, but let me tell you they are completely legit. Shop around, find some for less than retail, and enjoy. For me, Leica glass has the best image in the industry...even besting the Swaro SV glass. A+++

Leica Duovid 8+12x42 - 10/02/2010

by Michael from Los Gatos California

Optics, close focus, focus speed and agility are on par with the top binos. Nice job Leica. Heavy binos - I think my 10x50 SLC's are lighter. Heavy and not a superb balance in the hand. Eye relief not that good for eye glass wearers. Try before you buy. Strap holders wont take my harness which meant some custom work and these heavy binos need a harness. 8x all day is great. 12x is great but ***superb*** if you tripod with gitzo carbon fiber. WOW you can feel ok if you have to leave the spotting scope at home. Haven't tried to rig the bino with a 2x doubler but a steady 12x binoview is superb. Could be a workhorse bino for some but for me its a niche binocular for birding sparrows and shorebirds or astronomy. It's pretty hard to beat 8.5 or 10x42 ELs IMO.

Less heavy than two pairs of binoculars. - 07/01/2009

by Tony Shrimpton from Syracuse, NY

Heavy, yes, expensive yes….. but well worth it. To be honest I keep mine cranked up on the 12X, and seldom go to 8X, but its good to know its there and anyway the optics appear un-compromised by the ability to do this, and whenever I look through even other high end optics such as my “back up” Swarovski SLC 10x 42 (old) I prefer the Duovids. I have not compared to the 10+15x50 so do not have an opinion…maybe Eagle Optics could send me a pair to try?
I wonder how difficult it would be to design a high end true 8-15x zoom……
