Great entry level binocular - 06/19/2016

by Rod from Kentucky

I purchased the 8x30 version as a gift for a 10-year-old birder. Of course, I had to try them out myself. What a pleasant surprise! This is my first experience with the Kowa brand. I had previously recommended the Nikon 7x35 Action as an affordable, entry level binocular to new birders and have given a few of those as gifts previously. Now that I've tried these, I will recommend these instead. The view is better than the Nikon with less distortion at the edges. If the FOV is less, I did not notice. The ergonomics are better also and they are lighter weight. The focus wheel is slightly tight. Hopefully that will improve with a bit of use. It also takes about two revolutions to focus through from close up to infinity. But that is to be expected at this price point. They are well sized for a young person or someone with small hands, or if you are looking for a smaller binocular but aren't willing to sacrifice the view. While I won't be switching out my Zeiss binoculars for these, I feel confident recommending them. Of course, the Eagle Optics experience is top notch and shipping was faster than expected.

Compact Quality - 12/30/2014

by Timo K. from Finland

Binoculars were bought for my 10 yrs old boy for nature and bird watching. I was impressed of the "picture" and colour quality, robust build and foremost compact size. Very easy to wear and carry them with you. In its price class great choice for multiple purpose and age.

Perfect for my daughters - 11/17/2014

by Johan N. from US

I gave one of these each to my daughters (9 and 11 years old) recently. My daughters were very excited to have their own binoculars and they have spent hours looking at backyard birds, the moon, fire trucks on a distant road etc. I think 8x is about as high as you should go with kids anything higher would be too hard to stabilize. These binoculars are very well built and come with a decent padded neck strap. I honestly know very little about optics but the image seems nice and sharp to me. The size works for my daughters hands but I probably wouldn't recommend it for children under 9 due to its size. The focus wheel is easy to turn and they quickly figured out how to get the image nice and sharp. The only real problem is that now my daughters have the best binoculars in the house...

Kowa YF 8x30 Binoculars - 10/02/2013

by Betsy L. from Pennsylvania

I bought these binoculars as a wedding gift for a young couple about to go to Acadia NP for their honeymoon. Expensive binocs were not required here, but something decent, readily focused, easy to use, solidly built were all requirements. I went through a lot of reviews for inexpensive binoculars and finally decided on these. I took them out for a "spin" and found them great for the kind of viewing experience this couple will be looking for. I have only handled them for a short time to make sure nothing was out of alignment, but I feel that these binoculars were a good buy and hopefully will stand up to the travel usage they will get. Dealing with Eagle Optics is always great, too.

Good but not great - 09/14/2013

by Fatos A. from Charlotte, NC

I was looking for a decent light weight 8x30 porro binocular for general use. After much research and having a very good experience with a Leupold Yosemite 6x30 binocular I opted for the Kowa YF 8x30.
The binoculars arrived promptly an afternoon and I quickly compared it with the Yosemite's looking at my bird feeder about 30 feet away. While the image was clear and bright, I noticed a strong reflection on the left barrel, I don't know, if it were from prisms or lenses. It should have been from prisms, since the reflection looked mirror like. I took the Yosemite's in my hands again and looked harder to the bird feeder. The reflection was there, but much weaker. You could not see it unless you were looking for it. It is true that the lighting was unfavorable, with the sun in the general direction of the feeder, but the difference between the two binoculars was very noticeable. I went to another window and looked outside. The reflection was still there, but weaker. The problem was that once I saw it, I could ignore it anymore.
I have a couple of other binoculars, and none of them has this type of reflection.
I decided that the binoculars were flawed or there was a problem with the design. Therefore, I returned them and exchanged with a pair for 8.5x32 Vortex Raptors. These are slightly heavier and larger, but not by much. The image is very clear and bright; there is some kind of reflection in the same conditions, but much more tolerable. These are a keeper. I believe the 6x30 Yosemite's are the best in this respect (almost no ghosts and reflections), but I need that extra push in magnification. It is why I made this purchase in the first place. The image also seems to be better on the Vortex; softening on the outer edge starts later than in the Yosemite's case.
Overall, I am very satisfied with Eagle Optics purchasing experience. Their people were very cordial and helpful, in the purchasing, exchange process and shipping was free on everything. Although, I offered to pay for my exchange shipping, they cordially declined.

Thank you Eagle Optics.

These are high quality at an amazing price. The fit and finish is well above what you'd expect at this price point. The view from them is outstanding. Buy these and you won't regret it. Money well spent.

Best optics purchase I ever made - 07/23/2013

by Scott C. from United States

I'm a bargain hunter. As a result, I've owned some pretty crappy binoculars over the years. You know, those where you have to sort of cross your eyes to bring both images together. After reading many online reviews, I decided to spring for the $105 and get the Kowa YF 8x30. Yes, I know that $105 is cheap by optics standards, but read my first sentence again. I have never been so pleased by a pair of binoculars in my life. Crisp, sharp, quick focus, light, and finally just one image to look at! I learned after the fact that these were actually designed for children to use. But, as a large 51 year old man, I could not be happier. I use them for critter watching, as well as to check my target shots at the shooting range. I believe you can't go wrong with these binoculars.

Kowa YF 8x30 very good for the price - 08/07/2012

by Denny from Olympia, Washington

I don't use optics very often, have another pair bigger and more expensive. The Kowa YF 8x30 was given a good review on a site. Good for the price, and really was. I'm happy, easy to use, compact good clear view
