1st-class binoculars - 05/12/2015

by Vladimir from California

When you are getting older you start buying yourself expensive toys. Unfortunately, I am not an exclusion. I live near Pacific Ocean and use to walk on the beach. We have everything: whales, pelicans, sea lions, otters etc. At some point I realized that it would be nice to carry some optical device with me.

I visited all local stores, tried different binoculars and scopes. I did not feel like I was falling in love with something. (I am pretty picky BTW.) It's worth noting that I had no chance to try those top-notch binoculars models sold by Leica, Swarovski, Zeiss for >$1,000. Finally, based on reviews I ordered a 10x42 monocular from Zen-Ray for $150. I was pretty satisfied when it arrived. Not that it was something outstanding, but picture quality was actually very good comparing to what I was able to test before. And I was very impressed by its build quality. I even visited couple of stores to compare the monocular side-by-side with other brands. After all I seemed like it was a good purchase.

Then I made a huge mistake trying marine Fujinon binoculars at our local sea observation station. Although the binoculars were very old and worn, it was so much better than my monocular, that I immediately started researching on Fujinon brand. I ended up ordering Fujinon FMTR 7x50-SX.

What can I say about this binoculars? This is something really special. Comparing to everything I've seen before it's just another world. It's huge and bulky, but you can't stop looking though it. I don't use my monocular anymore.

Why it was a mistake to try this binocular? Because when you realize how cool this piece of optics is, you want to have it, and it's not cheap. If you can't afford this binocular, don't try it!

To summarize pros and cons:

- Simply amazing 3D picture with unbelievable level of details
- Very bright. As far as I understand it's the brightest binoculars you can carry. Note: my pupils dilate to more than 7mm; some people may not be so impressed by the brightness
- Flat view
- Impressive edge-to-edge sharpness
- Outstanding build quality
- Weight. You will be surprised, but weight is actually an advantage. Thanks to its weight this binoculars is very stable your hands

- It's bulky. If you have small hands, it may be a problem
- Although the level of chromatic aberrations is very small, they are definitely present. You can clearly see a bit of them near the edges

by Robert from City of Imperial Beach Lifeguard Service

The Imperial Beach Lifeguard Service has been using Fujinon Polaris 7x50 FXTR-SX binoculars for over 20 years. We have dealt with many vendors in the past and recently tried Eagle Optics. Eagle Optics was the lowest price on the internet and they were able to ship the same day. We received our two pairs of binoculars in two days. Great customer service!
