Great, clear view - 02/13/2010

starstarstarstarstar by Becky from Rochester NY

I recently started bird watching and was looking to upgrade from my old, heavy and not so great binoculars. These are very easy to use. I get an incredibly clear view even with my glasses on. I love the way the covers are tagged on to the binoculars. They feel light and the strap is very comfortable. I've looked at 8 x and 10x binoculars in a store, and am very happy I went with the 10x's. I'm just amazed at what a great, light and clear view I get looking at birds in my backyard, across fields, etc...

Why I bought the Ranger SRT 10x42 - 09/18/2009

starstarstarstarstar by Colin Evans from Cincinnati, Ohio

About 2 years ago I purchased the Ranger SRT 10x42 after researching for days about binoculars. I read customer reviews, read the types of warranties, researched the types of lenses, read about water/fog-proofing, considered weight, etc… After I had learned enough about my options, I thought up a ‘where, why, when and how’ chart to help me make my decision.

Where: This was important because the hikes I typically take are day hikes close to home and around the Appalachian regions in Ohio. It was important to consider the humidity and wetness of the area since plain lenses can fog up easily, so water and fog proof binos were a must. Weight was not much of an issue because most of the day hikes I take do not require heavy packs, so in this case I could handle a bulkier pair of binoculars. Even in the dark spots of the forests the 10x42’s allow light to pass through extremely well.

Why: For me, I wanted to see the local wildlife up close without having to get close to it or disturb it. 10x42 seemed to be a good choice as long as I could keep them steady in my hands. I also wanted to be able to pull them out quickly and be able to look through them without needing a tripod to hold them in place. *The SRT does have a mounting hole in the middle for a tripod connection if you want to have a steady view without holding them.

When: The ‘when’ can be both expected and unexpected when viewing wildlife, so for me I wanted a pair of binoculars that could be pulled out easily, focused, and protected during the periods where they weren’t being used. The rubber flip cups and eye piece protector allow me to quickly flip them off when I want to view something and are easy to slip back on when I’m finished.

How: While thinking about how I view wildlife through binoculars, eye pieces became a big deal to me. Flip cups in the eye pieces of the SRT are perfect for me because they allow people who wear glasses and people who don’t to easily switch back and forth to see through them. Having this option was a good idea to me because sometimes I’m wearing glasses and sometimes I’m not depending on the expected or unexpected wildlife sightings. Also, I like to hand them to the other people so they can see the wildlife easily whether they are wearing glasses or not.

I've had these for two years now and have found them to be just as good as the serious high-end binoculars that were being sold at the time.If you're a park wanderer or day hiker, these may be just for you.
