Golden Eagle HD 8X42 - 12/29/2015

by Fred D. from Tallahassee, FL

I bought these to replace my old Nikon Monarch 12X42. I liked the Monarchs but the 12X was getting a little shaky and I also wanted a little wider field of view to track birds in the trees. These 8X are crystal clear and very bright too. The close focus is a real plus. Purchased on line and the overnight free shipping was great. If you are into birding this is a great pair of binoculars to have.

great binocular for the price - 07/07/2015

by Neil B. from Cedar Rapids, Iowa

This is the third binocular that I have purchased from Eagle Optics, and I also bought a spotting scope. I always recommend EO to my summer ornithology students because they will get great optics at affordable prices for students, and, from experience, they really stand by that lifetime warranty.

I really like the Golden Eagle HD. I compared them with my Nikon Monarchs and the EO Rangers that I have, and they were sharper, brighter, more comfortable to hold,, and quicker to focus. I guess I never had problems with the diopter adjustment moving on any binocular since my first bargain pair 46 years ago, but it works well on the Golden Eagles. Of minor import, the accessories and the case with an inside pocket were welcomed.

With my visual acuity failing as I get older, I am looking to many years of birding with these. I would hope that the binoculars that sell for twice this amount are twice as good in the situations where we bird 95 percent of the time. I think these are excellent optics at a great price.

Amazing Viewing - 05/26/2015

by Jim L. from Belchertown, MA

The EO Golden Eagle HD 8x42 binoculars are excellent field glasses. Images are very bright and one can see details on birds easily in many lighting conditions. I especially like the exit lens size for ease of viewing in difficult situations. I would recommend these binoculars to beginners through experts as it makes identification easier and the sport of bird watching so much more enjoyable.

Great Binocs! - 05/13/2015

by Jonna C from Central Texas

I have now had the Eagle Optics Golden Eagle HD 8x42 binoculars for almost a year. The original pair had a small issue with the right diopter lock not working well. Exchange was totally painless. These binoculars were an upgrade from some Nikon 10x42's I'd had for a couple of years. Despite owning several Nikon Travel-lites over the years, I never really liked the big Nikon's. I looked at several binoculars at a local bird store and that's when I decided I had to have the HD. I can't say enough about what a difference and how pleased I am. I live in a rural setting and use them every day to look at birds, deer, etc., and every day think to myself this is the best $600 I've ever spent. I'm a fairly casual birder, but never regret for a moment investing in these excellent quality binoculars.

A great Binocular - 03/16/2015

by Helmut M. from Chapel Hill, NC

The Golden Eagle HD 8X42 is the fourth binocular that I have purchased from Eagle Optics. It replaced the binocular that I gave to Lay Win, my excellent guide in Myanmar. He had only an ancient Nikon binocular & admired my Eagle Optics, so I gave it to him as a tip for his services. The Golden Eagle is an excellent instrument, almost as good as a Swarovski, at 1/4 the price! It is remarkable how well it shows colors in dim light.

4th Binoc from Eagle Optics - 02/10/2015

by Helmut M. from Chapel Hill, NC

We purchased a Golden Eagle HD binocular to replace an Eagle Optics binocular that I gave to Lay Win, our birding guide in Myanmar. He had only an ancient Nikon & greatly admired to superior optics & close focusing of my binocular so I gave to him as a tip for his excellent services, This is the fourth binocular we have purchased from Eagle Optics & I believe that it is very close to the Swarovski binocular in quality, at one-fifth the price!

Eagle Optics Golden Eagles - 10/05/2013

by Carol M. from North Ridgeville, OH

I love these new binoculars. I had bought the EO Ranger 8x42 in the spring. They are great too. My husband needed a new pair as he is getting interested in birding too. I decided to buy these Golden Eagles and give the Rangers to my husband. The clarity of these is phenomenal!! I highly recommend these. Hubby loves the Rangers too!! We both love Eagle Optics products. The warranties are great too!!

Excellent for birding and hiking. - 09/06/2013

by John from San Diego

Better than I expected for birding and hiking. Light weight with
bright and clear optics they are very comfortable especially with the Eagle Optics harness. The excellent close focus is wonderful for flowers and butterflies.

Exceptional Optical Clarity for All Occasions - 08/28/2013

by Phil L. from Greenwood Village, Colorado

I recently bought 2 Eagle Optics Golden Eagle HD 8x42 Binoculars. One for my son, Dan's, birthday and one for me. We use these binoculars for Colorado University related wildlife studies, pika and birds. The clarity and light gathering qualities for low light dusk viewing are exceptional. They are certainly a quantum step above our Bushnell and Pentax binoculars. Thanks again for a quality product

Eagle Optics 8x42 Golden Eagle - 08/14/2013

by Dave P. from Whitby, Ontario, Canada.

First of all I don't have or have I ever had an affiliation with Eagle Optics. These are my own opinions based on my experiences with these and other types and brands of binoculars.

First of all, over the past 20 years I've owned, or looked through/evaluated, more roof prism, porro prism, and compact binoculars than I can remember, probably in excess of 60 pairs during that time. So I can say with confidence that I'm well versed and in a position to give an opinion(s)of what constitutes a great binocular and a great binocular value. I have to say that the EO golden eagle's are in my opinion one of the great binocular buys on the market today. When you factor in what you get with these binoculars verses what they cost, it is immediately apparent that the value is outstanding! Although labeled differently, make no mistake, these are the Vortex Viper 8x42's just in black with EO's brand name on them. If these had a slightly wider field of view (it's a good average field of view of 347' @ 1000 yards that's more than adequate, just not "big green" wide)and had an additional 2mm of eyecup length they'd be perfect. These were very well thought out from the binoculars themselves right down to the neck strap, objective lens caps, and case. Let me quickly go through the great features of them that I like.

HD Glass.

There are several advantages of using this type of glass in optical equipment such as excellent brightness and color saturation, but the best part is THE SHARPNESS of the image especially in the center of the field. I can't believe how well focused and sharp objects are not just close up but in the distance as well, simply amazing! There's a SMALL amount of CA visible under certain lighting conditions but you really do have to be looking for it. The reality is that it's always present even in the most expensive glass but the fluorite used in other high end binoculars reduces it to a level that is almost invisible to THE HUMAN EYE. The HD glass used in the golden eagles reduces it to the point that in the vast majority of daily observing situations you won't notice it at all. Also the eyepieces are very comfortable to look through although, like I said earlier, it would be nice if the eyecups were a couple of millimeters longer but that's my preference. No big deal.

The focusing wheel is very nice. A little stiff (but still smooth)initially, it works in after a couple of weeks and is then VERY smooth. It's a little on the "heavy" side but I prefer this type of feel in a focuser. You can focus near to far quickly enough to "get on" moving birds fast but you don't overshoot by much. "Gliding through tree branches" is pure pleasure.

Locking Diopter.

A very nice feature. Has an easy to grab ring that has the same surface as the center focusing knob.

Binocular body.

By using light weight materials these come in at the "goldie locks" weight at just over 24 ounces which is, in my opinion, perfect. Not too light and not too heavy, but just right. The black armored covering is nice to the touch, the "ribbing" gives the right feel (not like on some other bins where it is too thick and high in my opinion), and the balance is great. They have thumbs indents on the bottom which I find are just right although to some users they're either unnecessary or in the wrong spot, which is a personal preference. Only the user can decide if they like them or not but I think most people would find they add a nice level of comfort using the binoculars.

Tethered objective lens covers/rain guard.

Neck strap and case.

Lifetime unless you loose them, tinker with them, or they're
stolen. Doesn't get any better than that.

You can obviously tell how much I'm impressed with and like them. If you're thinking about upgrading your binoculars and have $700 but don't want to spend much more then I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you consider these. If you're financially in the enviable position of being able to buy one of the "big ones" then go for it, but if you can afford it and just "aren't quite sure" if you want to spend that kind of money, then again look at these. Although three times the price they ("the big ones") definitely aren't three times better IMHO.

Sorry if this was a little "long winded" but for those of you that finished reading it that are still "on the fence" about what to buy, I hope it helps you out.

Thanks for reading!

Eagle Optics Golden Eagle HD 8X42 - 11/13/2012

Focus wheel much too difficult to operate. By the time I get a bird in focus, it's gone! I'm returning the binoculars.

Wow! I LIKE!! - 09/19/2012

by Brenda G. from Huntsville, Al

Just received my Golden Eagle HD binocs today and I am impressed. I've been birding for over 15 years using Nikon 10x40's. Last rainy day sealed it for me that I needed to upgrade to binoculars that were waterproof. My Nikons are quite old but they have been a reliable old friend, just not on rainy days. I've held out for years for Zeiss but it seems they are always out of my range price wise-especially now that the HD glass are available by lesser priced companies. My decision was whether to go with Zeiss Conquest HD for close to $1000 or the Eagle Optics Golden Eagle for close to $600. I chose the Eagle Optics Golden Eagle HD.

I love the size and feel in the hand, they are at least 2 ounces lighter in weight than my old Nikons. The thumb indent is perfect, I like the ridges on top for grip. This time I went with 8 power instead of 10 as I've got a little shake but I really can't tell much difference as far as that goes. I can actually hold them with one hand and get a great view.

Two things are just amazing to me 1. Close focus down to 5.1 ft!! Unbelievable! and 2. Light transmission under tree canopy. I can really see how my Nikons were failing me in that area. And the light from these Eagles are what I remember Zeiss' forte was when I used a friends for a few minutes years ago. Now I don't know if the new Zeiss Victory HT's will blow these out of the water but for $2200 I'm not tempted to find out.

Tomorrow out of the yard and into the woods, lets see how my NEW friend does on these confusing fall warblers!
