Acuity of a scope in a portable instrument - 10/17/2009

by Robert Fiedler from Urbana, IL

I've owned these binoculars for over two years, and continue to be impressed by the amount of detail that they reveal. The image stabilization feature works well and greatly improves visual acuity, although one does have to hold them fairly steady for the image stabilization mechanism to provide optimum resolution. It's surprisingly easy to locate targets despite the high magnification (more difficult at close range, say ~20 ft) -- this is a huge advantage over a scope, even one with a zoom lens. The closest focus may be a bit better than advertised, perhaps 15 ft. I have 40+ years of experience using binoculars, and use these as my primary binoculars for birding.

I use them with contact lenses; 15 mm of eye relief is not quite enough to get the full field of view, even with the eye-cups rolled down. They are comfortable enough for as long as I can hold them up to my eyes -- they are heavier than most. I highly recommend getting a harness strap. Image stabilization requires nearly fully-charged batteries -- if you use rechargeable ones, you will want to charge them before heading out for the day. On the other hand, a single pair of lithium batteries may last for months of use.

Peerless in its price range - 10/02/2009

The optics on these binoculars are good enough that if you only used the built-in tripod adapter and never the IS feature, you might be satisfied with the wide 15x views. The image stabilization feature is a great boon, however. It's not the same as a stable tripod, but it makes it possible to use the 15x magnification effectively without a tripod. Using the IS feature, I can see more detail with these than anything I've used with lower-magnification. The astronomical views are wonderful. Instead of a jittering, you get an image that seems to float in the air in front of you. It does take a minor attempt at steadiness, however, and the more shaky you are, the more of the time resolution is reduced slightly as the prisms try to correct for the motion. Eye relief is enough for my eyeglasses with the eye guards folded down. When not folded down, the eye guards are very uncomfortable and stiff, though, easily the most disappointing thing about these binoculars to me. Finally, the focuser on mine seems to turn a bit too easily, and when looking upwards the focus sometimes drifts a little. So, they are not perfect, but they are easily the best binoculars for hand-held astronomy that I've ever looked through.
