A mecca for wildlife and naturalists

Any naturalist seeking a wildlife mecca will want to plan a journey to Detroit Lakes, Minnesota for the Annual Festival of the Birds held in mid-May. Surrounded by hundreds of thousands of acres of incredibly diverse habitat, Detroit Lakes serves as the launching ground for this small but well-established festival. Organized field trips will take you through a variety of refuges, from remote coniferous forests and peat bogs to prairies and the headwaters of the Mississippi River.

Notable birds and speakers

Over 200 different bird species have been spotted during past festivals. Four prized target species are the Three-toed Woodpecker, Boreal Chickadee, Spruce Grouse, and Red Crossbill. Busy days conclude at evening dinners with engaging speakers.
